Samsung Electronics Co. is planning on providing a Siri-like digital assistant to its next Galaxy S smartphone, as it attempts to rebound from the global setback which triggered the end of the flawed Note 7 lineup. The firm said the Galaxy S8 scheduled for release next year will be equipped with AI-enabled features “significantly differentiated from that of Apple Inc.'s Siri or Google, according to Rhee In-jong, the executive vice president. The flagship Galaxy S line will be critical in the recovery of Samsung's reputation after the previous Note 7 device bursted into flames. Shares of Samsung climbed 1.1 percent and had increased 29 percent in 2016 prior to today. The company will release new versions of the Galaxy S series in the first quarter of every year. The S8 will become the showcase smartphone since the Note 7 line is now extinct. Samsung reported a sharp decline in profit after the Note 7 mishap, as net income dropped 17 percent to 4.41 trillion won ($3.9 billion) during the third quarter, which brought its mobile profit to a record low of 100 billion won. Samsung recently recalled around 2.8 million washing machines in the U.S. as reports that the top of the machine can be removed when it is being used. The firm said in a statement that it will offer consumers a no-charge in-home repair of the machine, or a rebate which can be used when consumers purchase a new machine.
